ACTIVE Study Skills
SO ** This is a semester-only class with open enrollment. **
Course Description: My Study Skills class is based on six major core skills: Time Mgmt. and Organizational Skills (including, but definitely not limited to, maintaining a daily planner); helping students learn about their individual learning styles and teaching them learning-style strategies to utilize while studying; teaching students how to learn from their textbooks (a major learning tool for students); instilling productive class and textbook note-taking skills;
and, helping students learn how to successfully take tests. I always end the class with helping students learn how to set goals (big and small) for themselves.
I teach this course using an incremental teaching style, whereby I introduce a new concept every two weeks as well as to review the concepts from previous weeks. Effective study skills are learned and retained best when they are being implemented, not just discussed. Students must use these skills and strategies regularly so that they can see the benefits and will, therefore, continue using them. There will be plenty of handouts and hands-on activities for each skill or strategy so students are clear on how to implement each.
This is a course I have taught (for a fee) at a local homeschool group as well as through the Walled Community Education Center.
This course is for all middle-school and high-school students, not just for students who are struggling with study skills. All students can gain much-needed skills, skills that they will use in high school (studying at home, online courses, at school or co-op, etc.), as well as in college.
I want to see all students be successful in their schoolwork and other personal responsibilities, and to enjoy the benefits of the peace that that success can bring. My ultimate goals for students, when they leave my class, are for them to be more self-motivated and determined to do well in their studies, and to be more involved and more active in their learning...because they will know how. I will teach the skills and help students implement them, but ultimately, the students are responsible for their performance.
I actually get teased about my passion for study skills!
Course Expectations: Students will be expected to maintain a Daily Planner and class binder consistently and to implement regularly the strategies taught in class. There will be assignments related to their school work, as well as occasional quizzes to check retention.
Workload: Moderate
Teacher Provides: A Daily Planner for each student (details to come), their Study Skills resource binder, and any supplemental materials needed for class.
