Grade Range: 9-12Students will study the judicial system in detail. Then they will try a case from beginning to end from a selection agreed by a majority of the class.
The class will be a blend of lecture, group discussion, and hands-on advocacy.
Course Expectations:
Each student will be expected to participate in class and with some area of the mock trial. Here are a few of the roles the students will get to select from depending on the case being tried: plaintiffs/prosecuting attorney, defense attorney, juror, researcher, paralegal, court reporter, victim, police officer, and witness.
At the end of the semester each student should have a working knowledge of legal terminology, the judicial system, and how it works!
Prerequisites:
An ability to read and analyze at or above grade level.
Workload:
Moderate. The students will have to prepare for the trial according to their role, which may entail outside class meetings. There will be a few quizzes and a final "write-up" after the trial.
Classroom attendance and participation will be extremely important.
Grades will be assessed.

Student Provides: Notepad, pens, 3-ring binder, and highlighters
