Prof. Fee: $0
Homework: yes
Hours/Week: 2
Max/Min Students: 12/4
Grade Range: 9-12Graphic Design and Visual Communication
Full Year ** This is a full year course, with the expectation that students will continue for the entire year**
In class we will have short lessons as we introduce different concepts of design, look at examples of professional graphic designers and communicate new objectives and design vocabulary. We will use the rest of class time to begin the design process and learn to communicate with one another about our designs and work together to solve given problems.
Overall, students will learn graphic design through practicing the creation of thumbnail sketches, rough sketches, and presenting a final comprehensive design-- the building blocks of the design process. It will be quite different than a fine arts class.
Students learn the fundamentals of two-dimensional design, the foundation of art, graphic design, and visual communication, focusing on how through simple, yet intentional visual manipulation, points, lines, planes, gestalt, and color can communicate and create meaning.
Students will learn and practice the design process to find solutions to the visual problems they take on and will be introduced to the power of words through typography.
My goal is to help students be able to present and communicate well in an aesthetically pleasing way. This ability is helpful not only in a graphic design career, but almost any field.
Workload at home will be light to moderate. Homework time will be used to work out the design process and complete final design for presentation to the class. Time will vary from 1-3 hours.
**In an effort to be inclusive, the curriculum does not include the use of specialized technology (hardware or software). These digital tools are important, but not necessary to teach and learn the fundamentals of traditional graphic design and visual communication.
