HOME SKILLS: COOKING, SEWING, AND SKILLS FOR HOME MANAGEMENT
TEACHERS: Betsy Mason and Trina Blakeley
COURSE DESCRIPTION: Due to our move to NorthRidge, we are limited to the cooking we can do in a classroom with no sink or kitchen appliances. So Beyond Ramen Noodles is morphing into a Home Economics and Skills class with some cooking and other home skills needed for independent living. We will still discuss health, nutrition, meal planning, making balanced choices, and healthier food substitutions. But we will also add sewing skills needed for life when your mom isnt there to, for example, sew a button on a shirt for you or iron your job interview shirt, etc. We may also add topics like basic home repairs, first aid, laundry, etc., Specific content and focus will depend on the skill level and preferences of those in the class. Some advance preparation may be necessary for the food element of the class and outside material purchases may be needed for the sewing element of the class.
NOTE: Teacher must be notified of any and all dietary restrictions, ingredient sensitivities, and/or allergies in advance, so that accommodations may be made where possible.
COST: $80/year. Class limit: 10
TEACHER PROVIDES: recipes, ingredients, equipment, instruction, and guidance. We will have three sewing machines for class use.
STUDENT PROVIDES:
COOKING: Students will also need to bring ingredients and some cooking supplies such as mixing bowls, knives, cutting board, etc. Different weeks will require different contributions from teacher and students. Sometimes students will make their own individual meals, and sometimes the group will collaborate and make a common dish, each contributing ingredients and prep.
SEWING: Sewing supplies needed will be a simple sewing kit including: sewing scissors (scissors that only cut material and thread), sewing needles, straight pins, pin cushion, needle threader, white, grey and black thread). If you have a portable sewing machine, that may helpful to bring on weeks we are doing sewing projects.
COURSE EXPECTATIONS: Students will learn to be more independent and confident in the kitchen, preparing their own basic meals and independent in home skills as well. Participation is key to success of the class. If each student does not do his or her part on a group meal then everyone fails. And we all starve. Starving is bad. Every component is crucial. If your student will be absent, the teacher must be notified in order to make arrangements to cover that student's contribution.
PREREQUISITES: Students need to have a desire for learning and a willingness to participate and try new things outside their comfort zone. This is a hands on class, not a lecture. All students will be welcomed regardless of previous experience. Students will be expected to contribute to the setup and cleanup efforts necessary to keep the facility in good condition.
WORKLOAD/GRADES: Minimal work outside of class, such as prepping ingredients. If a sewing project is not completed in class, it may need to be taken home and finished there. No more than an hour per week. Grades will not be assigned, but a positive attitude and active class participation is expected every week.
