Prof. Fee: $0
Homework: no
Hours/Week: 0
Max/Min Students: 12/6
Grade Range: 6-8Course Description: English from the Roots Up (book 2) is an excellent vocabulary and spelling tool for any age student from the child who is learning to read through the middle and high school student preparing for college entrance exams. It develops words from Latin and Greek roots using simple mnemonic devices--index cards outlined in red for Latin or green for Greek. Recognizing Greek or Latin roots in English words enables the student to determine the definition and spelling of unknown words.
**Parents may choose to purchase their own copy of the book but it is not necessary. We will use book one in the Fall semester and book two in the Spring semester.
Course Expectations: Each week students will create flashcards for 7 10 word roots which come from Latin or Greek. There will be exercises and games during our class time to help students grasp the meanings of the roots as well as the different ways in which the roots can be combined with suffixes and prefixes to make common (and not so common) English words. There will be 100 roots each semester.
Prerequisites: None.
Workload: There is no real homework, however, students are encouraged to study the list of roots each week for class for competition.
Every student must bring one green marker and one red marker, as well as a pen or pencil, to class every week.
