Told in a straightforward, engaging style, The Story of the World series covers the sweep of human history from ancient times until the modern era. Africa, China, Europe, the Americasfind out what happened all around the world in long ago times. This read aloud series is designed for parents to share with elementary school children. It will introduce your children to the marvelous history of the world presented chronologically from the beginning of time. Each volume of The Story of the World includes the details of battles, kingdoms, cultures and customs from every continent and major people group woven together into a story that children will find mesmerizing. With short chapters, many less than 7 pages, The Story of the World presents history in small easily digestible chunks. Of particular appeal to all children will be the occasional story about a hypothetical child in the culture of that time and fictional stories that were popular during that time.
The four books in the series are:
VOLUME I: ANCIENT TIMES: first 5000 years of civilization including the First Nomads, Egypt, the Jewish People, Abraham and Joseph, Hammurabi and the Babylonians, the Assyrians, Ancient China, Ancient Africa, Exodus, the Phoenicians, the Greeks and Rome.
VOLUME 2: MIDDLE AGES: fall of Rome to the Rise of the Renaissance. Covers the major historical events in the years 400 to 1600 CE.
VOLUME 3: EARLY MODERN TIMES: Elizabeth the First of England to the Forty-niners/Goldrush. Covers 1600 to 1850.
VOLUME 4: MODERN AGE (1850 to 2000). British Empire, The Crimean War, the Meiji Restoration and more. From Victoria's Empire to the End of the USSR
Class Expectations: Come ready to learn and be respectful to others. Chapters read before class each week. This should take 20 min a week. Participation in class activities. Class time will provide engaging reinforcement activities (crafts, food, games, map work) that support the required weekly reading.
Prerequisites: An eager reader or listening ear and ability to focus long enough to complete a task. New students are welcome. Previous courses not required.
Workload: The students will need to read one or two chapters each week. If your student needs help completing this workload, consider reading to them or purchasing the audio text, as there will only be time to give an overview in class.
Teacher Provided Materials: handouts, timeline figures, maps, etc.
Students Provide: Purchase "Story of the World" V3 book to read at home. Notebook for homework and pencil. Also, scissors, glue, and colored pencils.
