Catalog Home Page
Prof. Fee: $0
Homework: yes
Hours/Week: 10
Max/Min Students: 12/4
Grade Range: 9-12Course Description: In this fun, fast paced, full year class we will cover approximately 20 of Shakespeares works (10 each semester). We will discuss what life was like in his time and how his work was received. We will explore his interesting word choices as well as cover words and phrases that have persevered into our own time. Of the plays, some will be covered in depth and some will be touched lightly. We will watch videos of several plays we will have studied in class, as watching them after study gives a deeper, fuller, richer experience to the student.
Course Expectations: All of Shakespeares work is now public domain so students will be given links to sites which give free access to his work. There will be some writing assignments but the bulk of our work will be students searching for meaning in the works they will be reading. We will have lively discussions so students are encouraged to leave their inside voices in the hall. In addition, Mrs. Sussman likes to teach literature using her packets method so for each work or unit we cover, students will be given a finite packet of work to do with instructions and due dates clearly defined.
When the final reading list is complete it will be emailed to parents of students enrolled in class.
Prerequisites: Students should be in high school and read at a high grade level. The reading is tough because it is 400 years old. If your child struggles with reading you may still enroll him or her in this class but parents will have to commit to reading these works to your child to help them prepare for class. As time goes on and your student has heard a few of the works read, they will most likely be more comfortable and capable of reading on their own.
Workload: Approximately 5 10 hours per week, depending on students reading levels
