School Year 2019-20
Catalog Home Page
Prof. Fee: $0
Homework: yes
Hours/Week: 1
Max/Min Students: 12/6
Grade Range: 6-8SN **This is a new semester-only class with open enrollment.
I will be using:
David MacCauley Bridges DVD and curriculum from PBS
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/buildingbig/bridge/index.html
as well as Knex Intro to Structures: Bridges. http://www.knex.com/building_toys/to_structures_bridges.php
The first few weeks, we will be learning terminology, engineering, and working with everyday materials to make bridges, then we will spend 1-2 weeks on seven different bridge structures. In teams of 3-4 people, we will build models of these bridges using K'nex.
The last week or two will be the challenge. The bridges must be physically sound, hold weight and be cost effective (all of their material will have a cost.)
Homework: 1 hour at the most.
As we study different types of bridges, I will assign 1-2 students to bring in examples. (Suspension Bridge.. they could print off the Golden Gate Bridge). I would ask for a 5 minute presentation to the class about this bridge. Your child should only have to do this once. I will also send links (mainly PBS) of bridge building games or video clips. Mainly to demonstrate what we've talked about in class. This will be optional.. but would add value.
** This ID is assigned to classes not on the current class schedule. The codes and descriptions are available then to revive to offer again. **
