Prof. Fee: $0
Homework: yes
Hours/Week: 1
Max/Min Students: 12/6
Grade Range: 3-5Public Speaking is a skill that will be used in every venue of life. In this class, we will learn public speaking in a fun, effective, non threatening way. Through this approach, the students will learn to speak in front of others in a confident manner.
The Toastmasters approach works as a circuit. The success of the program depends on everyone doing their part every week. Some of the positions each week are: Speaker, Joker, Impromptu, Current Events, Timer, Grab & Gab, Wordmaster, and Toastmaster. The positions rotate every week to give each student experience at different types of speaking, as well as listening and observing.
This is a fun way to get used to speaking in front of others! Students love this class (even ones that went in with trepidation)! They earn points by doing the different speaking positions to spend at a "store" at the end of the semester. Students are always vying to be the one to get the most points.
Course Expectations:
It is very difficult for this class to function if students dont do their homework, so completed assignments are a must. There will only be 2 to 3 weeks during the session that they will need to do a 2 minute speech. Most assignments are much simpler, and some weeks they will have no assignments at all (although they will be doing jobs in class). Students need to be able to write a little bit. At least once each session, they will have the position of Impromptu, and will need to write the points they want to talk about on a subject of their choice.
Prerequisites: Students should be reading & writing at least at a third grade level. There are work arounds for students that have trouble reading or writing, so please just talk with me first.
Student provides: Paper, Pencil, Pen, Folder
Workload: Light homework most weeks (sometimes none), although a few times a session students will be expected to prepare & give a 2 minute speech on a subject of their choice.
