Grade Range: 11-12* Anatomy Advanced Biology Lab FY is a companion class with Anatomy Advanced Biology Lecture. Students are expected to register for both hours. *
The human body is by far the most magnificent of Gods creations, and without a doubt, one of my most favorite subjects to teach! This year students will explore the depths of the human body using Apologias Advanced Anatomy and Physiology, 2nd Edition as the core text as well as other resources that will encourage and assist students in their understanding of the human body. Students will take a hands-on approach as we delve into the intricacies of the human body and take a systematic approach which includes the following topics: integumentary, skeletal, histology, skeletal muscle, nervous system, central nervous system, peripheral nervous system, endocrine, cardiovascular, lymphatic, digestive, respiratory, urinary and reproductive systems.
As a 2-hour class, the first hour will primarily be devoted to outlining the main points of the lesson using a lecture format in a clear and presentable fashion. Students will be encouraged to engage in frequent group discussions and utilize dialogue as a tool to enhance both their understanding and ownership of the material. The second hour will be set aside as the lab portion and may involve looking at slides under a microscope, working on lab reports and performing various dissections such as a sheeps brain, a cow kidney, a fetal pig and a cows eye. We will also spend time working on identification and labeling of anatomical models as time permits.
As a high school life science course, this class is designed with a moderate to heavy workload and may require 4-6 hours per week of study time in order for students to stay on top of the pace and workload. In order to gain the full credit (0.5 CU per semester), students must take both the lecture and lab together. This class can be taken for non-credit as well depending on the need or situation of the student.
Prerequisites for this course includes having already taken Biology and Chemistry with labs and have a solid understanding and working knowledge of the scientific process. Students must also be proficient in their written and oral communication skills and be able to work proficiently in groups. All students must be willing to participate fully in all lab activities, including dissections if credit is to be earned. No exceptions.
