This course is a literature based class about horses using the Beautiful Feet Books Curriculum. We will cover the most well known breeds, like the Arab, Thoroughbred, Morgan, Lipizzaner to name a few. From the following; books will be read and discussed:
King of the Wind; White Stallion of Lipizza; Justin Morgan Had a Horse; Misty of Chincoteague; Brighty of the Grand Canyon; Mustang, Wild Spirit of the West by Marguerite Henry
Black Beauty by Anna Sewell
Black Stallion by Walter Farley
We will cover 3-4 books per semester with some extra reading over the winter break. The student will keep a binder/notebook that will contain all the student's reports, drawings, Bible memory verses, glossary words and other things that are introduced throughout the course. Most of the reading will be done at home, while the hands-on part will be done in class. Occasional oral reading of selected chapters in class and assigned research homework is expected.
This fun and hands-on part of our Horsemanship class will be taught by Alyssa Parkyns in four sessions. She will cover safety (both in the barn and around horses), grooming basics, tacking up a horse, saddle and bridle. There will be some LIMITED riding lessons due to time constraints. Basics will include mounting, walking, halting, steering, more basics at a trot and obstacle course. We will split the class into 2 groups alternating barn and riding each week, so as to give everyone a fair chance to ride.
Course Expectations: Students will have opportunities to present in front of the class, learn the history of some of the well known breeds, the basic anatomy of the horse, some differences between the breeds, will have opportunity to draw the horses, and commit to memory some related Bible verses. Students will have some read aloud time in class and learn basic barn duties safety and riding. The Barn Days will be determined at a last minute during the first quarter of the semester , based on weather conditions. Parents are expected to pick up the students at the Parkyns at the end of co-op to allow students to have adequate riding time. Please come right after co-op. More details will be given before the start of co-op
Prerequisites: 6th grade reading level or higher. There will be much reading assigned each week. Up to 6 chapters a week or more. Our class will advance based on the level and speed at which the students are able to read and retain. Most of all bring your love of horses and enthusiasm to learn and have fun.
Workload: Moderate to heavy but fun.
