Course Description:
This exciting class will take students on a journey through American history as we study some of the great writings of American authors. Students will read a variety of focus works, including poetry, drama, short stories and novels. They will also read contextual material that will enable them to see how each focus text fits into the overall culture and history of America. As students progress through this class, they will develop their literary analysis skills, as well as their ability to write a well thought-out essay that expresses complex thoughts in an organized manner.
The class will be based on the Excellence in Literature: American Literature workbook by Janice Campbell. This book is full of resources for contextual reading and it contains all of the writing assignments. Please note that this course offers an honors option for the student who wishes to prepare for the CLEP test. This option requires extra reading as well as extra writing assignments. Please let the instructor know if your student will follow this option.

Course Expectations:
This class is designed to help students enjoy and appreciate American literature. While the atmosphere is intended to be relaxed and supportive of literary analysis, each student is responsible to come to class prepared for those discussions. Students are expected to complete the assigned reading and writing exercises for homework. Active participation in class discussions is an essential part of understanding literature and how it reflects, as well as influences, our history and culture. Students are also expected to be respectful of their fellow classmates.
Prerequisites:
Students must have a 9th grade reading level, be able to write a well thought out essay that includes introduction, thesis, body paragraphs and conclusion, and be willing to complete all of the assigned homework.
Workload:
Heavy, with assigned reading and writing each week. Students work will be graded.
