Grade Range: 8-12Course Description: This will be a fun class filled with interesting reading, discussion, fun projects, research activities and cooking /experimenting with healthy foods and helpful videos to help students better understand our topics
During this class, some of the things we will be covering are:
*Learning how healthy foods vs unhealthy foods affect your systems, organs, skin, hair, nails, teeth as well as your emotions and how your body works and feels overall
*Learn what foods provide your body with each vitamin
*Learn the difference between simple/complex carbs and what each does in the body
*Learn about the different types of fats
*Learn about the benefits of long term exercise and how to properly fuel your body before working out
*Learn the differences between the US food pyramid and the Swiss
food pyramid
Some activities/projects that we will do during the semester:
*Create a healthy foods meal plan for a week within a set budget for your family
*Go on a grocery store scavenger hunt (learning and comparing labels)
*We will have a healthy foods recipe challenge (students will need to create a healthy food item only from ingredient list given.......Like on the Food Network show Chopped)
*Do a cost comparison of a healthy food weekly menu vs a high carb/ higher fat meal plan (typically thought of as cheaper foods)
*Create Best food choice list for common pre-packaged foods and fast foods
*Learn how to select fresh produce and taste fresh seasonal items and ways to cook it
*Keep a daily food dairy for a week
Course Expectations: Students will earn about 50 hours or so towards their Michigan PE/Health Graduation Requirement credit. Students are expected to complete course work/ reading/ projects to obtain those hours
**8th graders may register for this class only if they are a mature student who will be responsible for completing their homework assignments on time as well as participating in class discussion/assignments
