Prof. Fee: $0
Homework: yes
Hours/Week: 3
Max/Min Students: 12/6
Grade Range: 4-6In this course, we will be learning all about pioneer life, of the 1800s, through the eyes of Laura Ingalls Wilder. This is a historical literature class. We will be reading all 9 books in her Little House Book Series. We will read approximately a book a month, with reading assignments through December and January when we are off. These books are readily available through your local library, but you can also purchase them easily at bookstores or online, used. You will need: Little House in the Big Woods, Little House on the Prairie, On the Banks of Plum Creek, By the Shores of Silver Lake, The Long Winter, Little Town on the Prairie, These Happy Golden Years, Farmer Boy, and The First Four Years. The books also come as a boxed set in case you want them all in a nice display box.
We will discuss the home readings in class and also have activities to do, each week, that coincide with events from the books. For instance, we might braid with straw to make rope, we might build a log cabin, make popcorn balls, whittle some wood, make butter, have a square dance, learn about fiddle music Lauras Pa played, or have our own spelling bee.
At the end of each book, I will ask the students to write a reading response. What did they think of the book? What was their favorite part? Or who was their favorite character and why? So there will be some short writing assignments to work on at home as well as the reading assignments. Students will be assigned about 60 pages of reading per week, so they need to be diligent and read 10 to 15 pages per day to keep up with the class. In order to get through all 9 books, there will be reading assigned over the winter break in December and January. This is a year-long class in order to get through the book series.
Prerequisites: Fourth Grade + reading level is helpful.
Workload: Moderate. Parents can expect their students to be assigned approximately 45-60 pages of reading per week, sometimes more and sometimes less.
******If I can schedule it, we may have an extra field trip for a one room school house experience toward the end of the semester. If so, there may be an additional cost for this.*******
