Are pirates really as cool as they look on television and the movies? What was it like working on a ship in the age of discovery (15th to 17th centuries)? Can you name the parts of a ship? Whats the difference between a pirate, buccaneer, and a privateer? We will learn about the good, bad, and ugly of sailing whether in a navy or as a pirate during this time period. We will cover the history of sailing and piracy from ancient times to modern day with large focus being the golden age of sailing 15th-17th centuries. If you would like to know the answer to these questions and more, then this is your class. The first thirty minutes of class will be discussion about the historical aspects of piracy and sailing. The second half will be some sailing related project including making pirate flags, having a pirate meal, tying knots, and a treasure hunt. We finish up the class talking about what the bible says about treasure/money and where our hearts should be on the matter.
