Get ready for the first ever Mini Med School designed by a Family Physician for your children to experience the preclinical and clinical courses that simulate real medical school! Taught at their level to inspire your children to love science, to see the amazing human body from anatomy to physiology and to perhaps nurture an interest in the medical sciences in the future! Taught via hands on and short didactic presentations that will feature lively interaction between teacher and students to foster learning for different learning styles.
The first semester will cover preclinical sciences touching on anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology(including microbiology), pharmacology, genetics and more! The second semester will cover clinical sciences and include basic first aid, taking vitals, basic CPR and how to help a choking patient, food allergies and learning about different medical fields like Family Medicine, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Dermatology, Radiology, and more. The end of year graduation ceremony will include, as desired by the parents, each child getting their own white lab coat and stethoscope* and certificate celebrating their graduation from Mini Med School!
Materials Fees: *An optional, additional cost for second semester of $25-30 (final costs to be specified 2nd semester, for white coat and stethoscope which I will purchase for parents to give to their students as part of their graduation ceremony from Mini Med School!)
Field trips are planned that may include trips to different doctor or hospital clinics, or other places that are appropriate for the course (optional as they will be on a separate day from coop and separate fees may apply).
Course Expectations:
5-6th graders or students in younger grades who want homework will be given the opportunity to supplement their work each week through extra research or reading. Participation is crucial to getting the most out of this course so please only sign up if your child seems enthusiastic about science!
Prerequisites:
Reading will be helpful. Those requiring help for reading will be paired with others in the class who are strong readers. Should be able to follow directions and write short phrases or sentences that will be posted on the board. Having an interest in science is highly recommended.
Workload: Weekly assignments for the 5-6th graders will take less than 30 minutes and will be light. Students who would like more work will be offered more depending on their interests.
