Prof. Fee: $0
Homework: no
Hours/Week: 0
Max/Min Students: 6/1
Grade Range: 7-12FY ** This is a full-year course, with the expectation that students will continue for the entire year. **
This class will be a small group tutorial to help students struggling with reading comprehension or content reading. We will look at high interest topics in class and work on comprehension strategies such as context clues, skimming, main idea, and summary.
At the beginning of the course, assessments will be done to see what individuals need. Each class would begin with a group read on a high interest topic practicing our reading and comprehension skills, usually highlighting a strategy. Then the rest of the class would be a reader's workshop format where I will do individual conferences with students on the reading work they brought for the day.
Students will be expected to have reading work from their other classes or a book at their level to utilize in class so we can focus on their studies/reading while using these new strategies.
A resource that I will use is http://www.kellygallagher.org
and appropriate articles from http://www.kellygallagher.org/article-of-the-week/.
