Grade Range: 7-9Description: This course will follow the curriculum: Teaching the Classics: A Socratic Method for Literary Education written by Adam Andrews. The Socratic method focuses on teaching the student how to think. It begins with questions and encourages the student to develop their powers of observation, deduction, and evaluation. In our course we will be discussing plot, theme, climax, resolution, setting, characters, and literary devices in the literature we are reading and how these elements are used to communicate an authors message. If time allows I hope to include the study of worldview also. We will study selections from poetry, short story classics, children classics, and at least 3 novels. Possible titles include: The Raven, Lady of Shallott, Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, The Light in the Forest, Around the World In 80 Days, Huckleberry Finn, and/or a selection from the Narnia Chronicles.
Expectations for students: Class time will be spent primarily in discussing the assigned literature; ALL students will be expected to contribute positively in discussions. It will be very important for students to READ the assigned literature for each class period. Students will also be expected to prepare short writing assignments.
