Stock Market Game
An online simulation of the global capital markets that engages students grades 7-8 in the world of economics, investing and personal finance and that has prepared 15 million students for financially independent futures.
This class will use The SIFMA Foundation's Stock Market Game program. A description of the program as stated in the program flyer: Students are challenged to develop a successful investment portfolio by investing a virtual $100,000. Students work in teams of 2 to 5 to investigate and gather news and data on potential investments. Students utilize a broad range of informational texts and evaluate current events as an integral part of The Stock Market Game (TM) experience. Students buy and sell real world stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. They analyze and manage the risks associate with economic and political events and learn about the capital markets. The management of the students virtual investments are done online via The Stock Market Game site. Therefore, access to a computer is necessary for participation in this class (but a computer is not necessary during class time). This is a continuation of last semester. We will expand and build upon the stock market basics covered during the first semester. We will cover more advanced topics such as Price/Earnings Ratios and Short Selling. Since we have already covered the basics, they should have a better developed strategy for investing much earlier for this round of the game.
Course Expectations: As described on the SIFMA Foundation website, the Stock Market Game is an online simulation of the global capital markets that engages students . . . in the world of economics, investing and personal finance, and prepares them for financially independent futures. More than 600,000 students take part every school year across all 50 states. The website goes on to say, An independent study by Learning Point Associates found students who participated in the SMG program scored significantly higher on mathematics and financial literacy tests than their peers who did not.
