Course Description: A two semester survey of United States History covering 1492 to 1914 (first semester); and 1914 to 1989 (second semester). This course will use the narrative history by Dr. William J. Bennett, "America: The Last Best Hope" (Volume I and II) for an overview. The textbook will be supplemented with a selection of directed readings (essays, non-fiction, original sources, biographies, and historical fiction) for students to focus more in-depth on particular periods of time or subjects of specific interest. Also available are abundant online resources coordinated with the text including study guidelines, ideas for projects, and help for preparing to take the AP History exam. Class sessions will focus on developing a greater understanding of our history through a Christian worldview perspective, and will include some lectures to provide historical flow and context, discussion of assigned readings, and a variety of creative activities to emphasize the importance of understanding our present circumstances in the context of history.

Students will take frequent quizzes on the assigned readings, as well as two tests per semester that will be comprised of multiple choice questions and 1 essay question. Periodic 2-3 page essays will be assigned on selected topics that may require the reading of additional sources, as well as a 5-7 page term paper or other project at the end of each semester which will require the use of additional sources (such as historical biographies and non-fiction accounts of historical events).
