This introductory class to the writings of William Shakespeare is a great way to become familiar with the Bard. While studying Shakespeare may seem like a daunting task, this class is designed to help the students truly understand the language and story lines. Students will have an opportunity to read, act out, listen to and watch four of Shakespeares best known plays. Two plays will be covered each semester, along with shorter studies of Shakespeares poetry. This slower pace will enable the students to take their time and develop a deeper understanding of the works.
As we explore Shakespeare, the students will also learn the basics of analyzing literature. They will discuss how the plays fit into history, what inspired Shakespeare to write, how he developed his characters, why the setting is important, etc.
To further the ease of comprehension, the class will use the Oxford School Shakespeare versions of the plays. These paperback books are excellent in that they contain character information, basic plot lines, and summaries of each scene. The books also contain plenty of notes in the margins to help with understanding the language and references to Elizabethan culture. They can be purchased new for approximately $8.00 each or you can find used copies for less.
**Each student will need his/her own Oxford School copy of the plays.**
