Prof. Fee: $0
Homework: no
Hours/Week: 1
Max/Min Students: 12/4
Grade Range: 9-12This course will be an in-depth study of the amendments to the Constitution, particularly the Bill of Rights. My main objective for this class is to provide students with a deep appreciation for the importance of protecting our individual freedoms. Students will explore these topics through class discussions, current events, and reading assignments.
We will discuss our Bill of Rights in the context of our current 2016 world and address some of the following questions: "Does the Constitution say that we have a separation of church and state?" "Do I have to talk to the police if they question me?" "Can the police look through my smartphone?" "Does the Constitution say we have a right to privacy?"
This class will address some timely but sensitive topics decided on by the Supreme Court in the last 50 years (abortion, marriage, flag burning, etc.) so please consider the maturity of your student.
Students will be expected to complete all assigned reading prior to class so they can participate in discussions, and to attend class with a willingness to learn and participate.
There are no prerequisites and the workload is light. The reading assignments will often be a Supreme Court decision on the topic we will be discussing. It should be at most an hour of work per week to prepare for class.
Teacher will provide print outs as needed. Student will need to provide a three ring binder, paper, and a copy of the Constitution with all the amendments.
