Teaching Literary Elements with Short Stories 6-8
Students will learn about character development, setting, symbols, similes, metaphors, plot, conflict, dialogue and more by analyzing four easy to read short stories written between 1936 and 1998. Students will use these stories to stretch their analytical muscles to better understand why each story works so well. Students will participate in class discussions and complete their homework. Homework varies from writing short summaries to filling out worksheets to composing an original piece. Class will also include peer writing workshops, an experience homeschool students do not always get, where they will share their work with their peers and learn from one another, following several guidelines given out beforehand.
Homework: Light-- one hour per week most weeks, though sometimes it could be more.
Class is based on Scholastics "Teaching Literary Elements with Short Stories." Students will receive numerous handouts from teacher.
Other: Students will need a three ring binder with dividers and lined paper.
