Socrates himself never spelled out a "method." However, the Socratic method is named after him because Socrates models for us philosophy practiced - philosophy as a way of living, as something that any of us can do. It is an open system of philosophical inquiry that allows one to question from many vantage points.
We begin with a biblical worldview lens from which we will view all questions. The facilitator poses an initial question to provide an environment of inspiration to articulate each unique perspective.
Many times one answer may not be found. However, a Socratic dialogue will mentally and spiritually challenge and/or perplex, in a wonderful and exhilarating way.
This is meant to be a thoughtful and reflective philosophical sharing. For this to take place, each participant must need and want to cultivate their capacity to become a more careful listener. The ability to listen with all one's being to what other participants are sharing is one of greatest disciplines. A Socratic Circle is meant to provide a refreshing alternative to the way many groups engage with one another.
A Socratic Circle engages 1/2 of the class, while the others observe. Afterwards, the observers reflect through dialogue. Then the whole process is repeated as the groups change places.
Homework includes preparation for discussion (30+ min/week)
