Max/Min Students: 12/6
Grade Range: 5-7This year we are switching from RS4K Chemistry and Physics to the new Apologia Chemistry and Physics book. We will do the chemistry sections in the fall and the physics sections in the spring. The chemistry portion introduces children to chemistry concepts such as atoms, the periodic table, molecular bonding, chemical reactions, acid-base reactions, mixtures, and large molecules such as polymers. We will also cover the first chapter of the physics section Newton's Laws of Motion so that we can finish the whole book. In the spring, we will cover physics of motion, sound, light, energy, thermal energy, magnetism, and electricity. We intend this course to be a bridge between the younger Apologia courses and the middle school levels. We will do fun experiments to learn about each of these topics. We will also learn how to fill out lab reports, outline chapters, and take quizzes and tests which are the skills needed for middle and high school science.
Course Expectations: Students should be able to read and write well to take this course. Through reading at home, hands on experiments, writing lab reports including definitions, quizzes and tests the students will master basic chemistry terms and concepts that will give them a head start on middle school science classes.
Teacher Provides: All materials for experiments, and lab/workbook pages to go in binder, quizzes and tests
Students Provide: Apologia Young Explorers series: Exploring Creation with Chemistry and Physics textbook. You do not need the lab/journaling notebook. Rainbow Resource and CBD have it for around $26. We will be making our own lab/workbook. Please also provide a 1 inch three ring binder and a pencil. The $38 materials fee covers the lab kit for each student for the year.
Prerequisites: None
Workload: Students need to be reading and writing well to participate in this class. Each student will need to read a chapter from the student book in a week or two depending on the schedule. Some weeks we will have a page of homework in the lab books. We will have a chapter quiz every other week. I will grade the class unless you tell you don't want a grade. 50% of the grade will be quizzes, 25% will be the homework, and 25% will be participation. I also give liberal extra credit and ways to earn back credit for wrong answers. We want this to be a positive experience with grades, but get them ready for what is coming in higher grades. The grades are simply an incentive to complete the work.
** This ID is assigned to classes not on the current class schedule. The codes and descriptions are available then to revive to offer again. **
