Course Description: In this Hand Bell Choir Class, students will learn several skills. First, they will learn how to properly handle the bells. They will learn how to produce different sounds from the bells; starting and stopping the tones they produce. Students will be taught to read music; they will know how to identify notes, learn the duration of each note and follow color-coded notes that correspond to the colored bells. They will improve their musical ear training and learn to play music in a group. Experiencing beautiful music together as a group is an exhilarating feeling that you can’t achieve alone. We will learn several songs, starting with melody only songs and working up to songs with chords and two or three parts. It will be fun and challenging. Research shows that playing music energizes both hemispheres of the brain and raises IQ levels. Students will exercise their brains and have fun doing it! We will perform our pieces for Showcase at the end of the semester and possibly at the Choir Concert.
Course Expectations: Come to class with a positive attitude, willing to be part of the group. We may have one additional practice outside of co-op to prepare for Showcase.
Prerequisites: None, although reading music is helpful.
Workload: We may have a few reading music worksheets sent home as homework. Students will not have access to hand bells at home but are encouraged to learn their bell parts at home by counting and using something in place of the bell to practice.
