Get ready for the legal adventure of your life! Introduction to Law will start with a brief study of our legal system, statutes, and cases. Students will learn about the sources of law (Legislative, Administrative, Common Law, Judicial, Executive). They will also be introduced to specific areas of the law including, but not limited to, Criminal Law, Civil Law, Constitutional Law, Civil Rights, Property Law, Real Estate Law, and Probate Law. The students will also be able to identify the parts of a contract and learn how to write a short contract. Students will be attending a public hearing, going to court, visiting a law library, and exploring the Hall of Justice in Lansing, Michigan.
The class will be a blend of lecture, group discussion, reports, and several field trips.
Field trip information. To provide you with a more well-rounded curriculum and to help you achieve the credit hour requirements several field trips will be held as homework during the course of your studies:
1. Public Hearing (weekday, group field trip or individually). Students will be required to attend a city council meeting, school board meeting, or township meeting, and report back to the class.
2. Law library (weekday or weekend, group field trip or individually). Students will be required to visit a law library to complete their homework for the research and writing portion of the class.
3. Courtroom visit (weekday, group field trip or individually). Students will be required to visit a courtroom and report back to the class.
4. Hall of Justice in Lansing (weekday, group field trip or individually). This field trip is not required, but strongly suggested. If a student cannot attend this field trip, the information for the homework is provided on-line.
5. Other field trips. Other field trips may be organized, but these would be optional.
All field trips must be completed by Week 13.
