Mr. Kline is a professional instructor. The cost for the class is $75 per student per semester (listed on the lab class code). This includes all lab materials.
BIOLOGY is the study of life. Using a Christian Worldview, we will use the Scientific Method to study the basics of life, including it's chemistry and structure. We'll study the science of organisms, including Kingdoms Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae and Animalia. We will also study Cytology, Cellular Processes, and Genetics. If there is class interest, we may cover Introduction to Human Anatomy and Physiology during the Winter Break for extra credit.
Course Expectations: Students will be expected to follow a guided independent reading schedule to keep up with the coursework and exams. Students will attend Lecture 5th hour and Lab 6th hour. Chapter Tests may be sent home and are expected to be taken without the aid of book or notes. Parents may be expected to proctor and may assist in grading exams. To demonstrate understanding, students will participate in weekly discussions. There will be experiments, lab reports to write up, dissections and microscope work. Optional Field Trips may occur.
Teacher Provides: Dissection materials, microscope, slides and companion multimedia CD
In addition to using the BJU high school Biology Text, Mr. Kline will use outside resources and handouts to help the students better apply the information that they learn in lab and in textbook readings.
Students Provide: Bob Jones Biology Student Text, 4th ed., @ www.bjupress.com; 3 ring binder with looseleaf paper; colored pencils; 4 tab dividers
Prerequisites: This is a Full Year High School level class. There will be dissections, labs, microscope work, and weekly homework assignments.
Workload: Moderate: We recommend 45-60 minutes of studying/day. Students should plan to study for this course 5 nights a week and maintain their coursework binders. There is a significant amount of memory work with the vocabulary words in each chapter. Parental involvement, in terms of monitoring student's progress and proctoring/grading exams, is expected. A study group will be offered in South Lyon for those who need additional help. This study group is highly recommended but not required. The group will be led by Josie Elmers.
GENERAL BIOLOGY vs. HONORS BIOLOGY:
General Biology students will be responsible for completing all required reading, recording key terms and completing the review questions within the text book. Honors students will be given additional study materials each week to supplement the textbook. Both groups will be responsible for lab participation, reports and tests. The lab class code is 6BIO for both General and Honors students.
