[FEES NOT YET CONFIRMED WITH MAESTRO BARBEAU]
While reading or rereading the literary works of Tolkien, students will be expected to dig under the story surface for universal truths about good and evil, power and weakness, honor and corruption. We will examine the Trilogy as a window into the historical time period of Tolkien and as a lens through which to view his personal experiences with war, faith and politics. Tolkien's work generated an entire genre of fantasy literature with both subtle and profound impact on our current society. We will be researching these. I will develop projects for the class based on individual student's interest in writing, doing research, drama, art, music, and debate. Dressing as a Tolkien character for a Middle Earth feast will definitely be encouraged! With my background as a fight director, we can safely say that the weapons of Middle Earth will be examined in detail from the bows of the orcs to Glamdring and from Anduril to the axes of the dwarves. A field trip to practice archery will be coordinated if parents consent.
Prerequisites: Have read one of Tolkien's books or have seen one or more of the movies
Homework: Reading outside of class of both Tolkien's works and selected pieces of analysis and criticism.
