What can our students learn from movies? A whole lot, including literary analysis. That is the premise of this class. A movie tells a story. That means it has a point of view, a plot, and character development. Watching and analyzing a well-made movie can teach students the elements of good story telling. The 17 movies covered in this class are carefully chosen classics such as The Music Man, To Kill a Mockingbird and The Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Students do much more than just watch! The movies provide short stories and the questions, used for discussion, guide students into analysis of literary elements. Each lesson contains questions for compositions. The writing process will be used in order to fulfill the English requirement.
Course Expectations: All of the movies will need to be watched at home. This will require some planning by the student and the parent. Each movie will take two weeks to analyze. During the first week, the student will be required to answer the questions in the student workbook; during the second week, the student will write a short essay.
