FALL SEMESTER: WEATHER. We will study weather in the fall and will focus on what causes weather, different climates, and weather phenomena such as hurricanes, earthquakes, and thunderstorms, as well as how forecasts are made. We will utilize a variety of hands on activities to reinforce what is covered in the reading.
SPRING SEMESTER: GEOLOGY. In the spring we will focus on geology and will cover basic geology concepts, minerals, soils, earths layers, the atmosphere, biosphere, magnetosphere, and earth as a system to give kids a solid foundation of geology. Each student will finish the class with a rock/mineral kit for them to keep.
TEACHER PROVIDES: All materials for hands on activities and experiments.
STUDENT PROVIDES: The textbooks required for this class are "The New Weather Book" by Michael Oard, "Scholastic Atlas of Weather", and "Focus On Middle School Geology" by Rebecca W. Keller. Both "The New Weather Book" and "Focus on Middle School Geology" can be found on amazon.com or rainbowresources.com. (For the geology book please make sure you get the middle school book and not the elementary book as they have the same cover.) "Scholastic Atlas of Weather" is out of print but can be found at amazon.com for just a few dollars. Each student will also need a 3-ring binder as we will be building our own lab book, as well as paper, pencil or pen, and colored pencils.
COURSE EXPECTATIONS: Students need to come to class having completed the assigned reading and ready to participate in activities and discussions. Students will also need to complete worksheets, lab reports, and tests.
PREREQUISITES: Students need to be reading and writing fairly well or have someone at home committed to helping them with these activities.
WORKLOAD: Work at home will be light to moderate. Each student will need to read a short chapter from the textbook. There may also be either a worksheet or lab report to be completed at home. There will also be weekly quizzes and a final exam. All of the quizzes and the final will be open book unless the parent specifies otherwise. This class will be graded with the grade broken down as 25% participation which includes homework, 50% weekly quizzes, and 25% final exam. We will spend time in class reviewing for the final. The grades are intended to be an incentive to complete work as well as a way to begin to familiarize the kids with the idea of testing.
