World Literature: Tolkien is an advanced, college preparatory course designed for 11th-12th grade students. We will use the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien as a springboard for studying epics, myths and legends from around the world. Tolkien was a student of literature, mythology, and language, and we will take a look at what works influenced his writing.
Literature students will need to provide:
Fall Semester
*"The Odyssey" by Homer (to be read during the summer)
-"The Silmarillion" by J.R.R. Tolkien
-"The Hobbit" by J.R.R. Tolkien
-"Beowulf"
-"The Holy Bible" (any translation, instructor will be using the English Standard Version)
Spring Semester
*"Les Miserables" by Victor Hugo (to be read during Winter Break)
-"The Lord of the Rings Trilogy" by J.R.R. Tolkien
-"The Silmarillion" by J.R.R. Tolkien
-"The Holy Bible"
We will also read excerpts from various works, which will be provided by the instructor or read online.
Class time will be spent discussing and analyzing the literature that was read for homework. There will also be a short lecture during class as needed.
Assignments per semester include two 3-5 page essays, one mid-term oral recitation assignment, and a final 8-10 page research paper. There will also be assigned weekly homework that will include reading and various light writing assignments.
Course Expectations
Students are expected to complete all reading and writing assignments before class each week.
Prerequisites
British Literature and students must be able to read at an 11th-12th grade level or above. They will also be expected to compose well organized and thought out essays. *A sample essay will need to be submitted and reviewed before acceptance into the class.*
Workload
Heavy, with a significant amount of reading each week, as well as writing assignments.

All reading material as noted above, notebook, pencils
