Description:
Apologia Exploring Creation with Astronomy is an in-depth, yet age-appropriate study of astronomy from a Biblical perspective. This class is primarily hands-on lab and small group work to supplement the readings at home.
This class begins with a lesson on the nature of astronomy, and then it covers the major structures of our solar system. Starting with the sun and working towards Pluto, the student will learn details about all nine planets (or is it eight? - your student will have to decide) in the solar system. Along the way, the student will also learn about Earths moon, the asteroid belt, and the Kuiper belt. After that, the student will move outside our solar system and learn about the stars and galaxies that make up Gods incredible universe. Finally, the student will learn about space travel and what it takes to be an astronaut!
Course Expectation: The students will have a better appreciation and understanding of the study of astronomy, the sun, planets, the moon, space rocks, stars and galaxies and space travel from a Biblical perspective. Each student is expected to participate in weekly READING to be prepared for fun class comprehension games, hands-on projects, small group discussions and journaling over the course of the semester.
Materials Fee: An additional $10 per semester
Teacher Provides: Each lesson has an experiment (13 total for the FULL year). A kit is available for purchase. We need a 6 student minimum to receive the discounted co-op price of $38/kit. I will order for the group and bring the kits each week that we are to perform experiments.
** SIBLING DISCOUNT: If you have two siblings in the same hour, they may share a lab kit and pay a $5 course fee per semester for the second child. To receive this discount, register both students for the same class, and also register one of your students for class code KIT. Your family invoice will be adjusted manually when payments are made. If you do not have the KIT code on your family schedule, it is assumed that you wish to pay for your students to have their own lab kit.**
Students Provide: Exploring Creation with Astronomy Textbook, and Astronomy Notebooking Journal both by Jeannie Fulbright (see apologia.com or www.creationsensation.com or www.christianbooks.com). A Notebook Journal must be purchased. Students also need to bring to class scissors, glue, colored pencils, and pencil.
Workload: The textbook is interesting and easy to read so this should be a light to moderate work load. Reading must be done each week before class to be prepared for fun in class comprehension games. Grades will not be given.
Student Expectations: Read lesson in text, participate in class discussions/experiments, work on Exploring Creation Notebooking Journals, Term Projects and enjoy learning together as we explore some of Gods vast and wonderful universe.
Prerequisites: Students should be able to write (or verbally communicate) short thoughts, ideas and summaries. It would be beneficial for the student to be reading the text at home (with parent if necessary) to make projects more meaningful.
