Course Description: Can you make art with food? Of course you can! We can use our resources, resourcefulness, and creativity to make all manner of fun things with food. We will create edible arrangements, fun cupcakes, faux-food the possibilities are endless! Students will learn cake decorating techniques, presentation tips, ingredient substitutions, and much more. We will learn the principles of baking, chemistry, formulas, the use of weights and measures, and identification, use and care of equipment normally found in the bakeshop. Students will learn about standards relating to safety and sanitation in the kitchen. Whole dessert presentations and creative plate presentations are also emphasized.
Course Expectations: Students will be expected to come to class prepared with any ingredients or materials previously assigned. Be ready to get messy and be creative! And be prepared to help clean up after ourselves. High school students will be asked to submit two ideas for consideration by mid-summer. Check pinterest.com for a billion creative ideas (give or take). These student project requests will be used in both the MS and HS classes.
We will make projects to display and/or eat at the showcase at the end of each semester.
Prerequisites: No previous cooking, crafting, or art experience is necessary.
Workload: Students may have as much as an hour of preparation on some weeks. For example, baking a batch of cupcakes, preparing a batch of fondant, or looking for project ideas. Many weeks will have no at-home prep.
Teacher Provides: Equipment, supplies, ideas, and creative guidance. Materials fees will be used for individual and shared equipment and tools, and consumables used in making our creations.
Student Provides: A willingness to participate, have fun, and be creative. Students may need to bring some equipment, materials, or supplies from home.
