Early American Literature and Composition (MS)
Description: Early American history will come alive as students read novels set in specific time periods accompanied by instruction on the important historical facts and literary elements. At the completion of each book, students will learn to develop and apply their critical thinking and writing abilities to compose logical, well-expressed essays. Writing instruction will include brainstorming, outlining, rough draft editing and final draft writing. Class time will be comprised of lecture, group discussion, and cooperative learning activities.
Novels to be read Fall 2018 include: The Witch of Blackbird Pond, Sign of the Beaver, Johnny Tremain, and Carry On, Mr. Bowditch.
Novels to be read Spring 2019 include: Invasion of Sandy Bay, Call of the Wild, Across Five Aprils, and Brady.
Course Expectations: Students will be expected to participate in class discussions, and cooperative learning activities. Students will be expected to complete writing assignments and/or projects in a timely manner. Comprehension questions will be assigned weekly. A variety of essays formats including narrative, comparison, persuasive, etc. will be assigned at the end of each book (We will work through these processes in class).
