Hours/Week: 0
Max/Min Students: 12/6
Grade Range: 7-8
Main objectives:
1) Offer an environment to become comfortable with public speaking
2) Equip students to become valuable assets in a production outside of a performing role in the cast.
Improvisational theater is a fantastic tool in the drama classroom. It assists students in learning to react and respond to unexpected situations, and builds confidence as well as creative abilities.
Fall semester:
The first 2 weeks will be review from spring 2018, using short games to review foundational elements:
What is theatre?
Observation
Creating an ensemble
Movement and space
Environment
Character Development
Objective/Tactics
Focus/Concentration
Moving forward, new material will be covered from Teaching Drama by Beat By Beat Press:
Utilizing Voice
Listening/ Reacting
Stage Directions/ Blocking
Putting it all together
During the remaining weeks of fall semester, we will dive into the different roles of theatre with the hopes of inviting educated individuals to visit and give us hands on learning in some of these specific roles:
Stage Manager
Theatrical Make up Artist
Scenic Designer/builder
Costume Attendant
Lighting Designer
Producer, Musical Director, Choreographer, Cast
Much of the material in this class is intended to support our Fall Musical Beauty and the Beast and all productions in the future.
HOWEVER, this class is not required for a student to participate in the musical.
AND, students in this class are not expected to participate in the musical, but it is encouraged to assist in a creative or technical role, since they are learning valuable skills not necessarily common to all.
If students in this class decide to participate in the musical in a role outside of the cast, there is no fee. We welcome artistic, technical and backstage help.
Spring semester:
Our objective is to perform a short skit at showcase or during our last day of class using all our newly refined skills mixed with Improv.
We will continue to sharpen our improv skills through weekly games.
Whether we have a developing writer, director, or artist, we will capitalize on our strengths and produce a very short yet sharp performance.
If your student took MS Improv spring 2018, there will be new material in this class after 2 weeks of review.
If a new student has not taken Improv before, they will do just fine, since most skills do not build on each other, but just take practice. Any previous skills will be reviewed the first 2 weeks of class.
Prerequisites: Students should demonstrate a willingness to perform in class.
Homework: ½ hour a week during the last 6 weeks of fall semester, gathering info on the weeks theatrical role.
No material fee
