What do a red herring, band wagon and slippery slope all have in common? Youll find out by enrolling in this course. The Fallacy Detectives is a year-long course focused on teaching students how to recognize bad reasoning. What is a fallacy? A fallacy is an error in logic-a place where someone has made a mistake in his thinking. The students will be engaged in a lesson each week (read aloud in class), group discussion on the concepts and examples presented and then work on exercises to reinforce the lesson in class. They may also participate in The Fallacy Detective Game in class to reinforce and apply their knowledge.
Course Expectations:
The students should come to class ready to listen attentively and participate in class discussions. By the end of the year, students will be able to recognize fallacies, be better thinkers with minds much more attuned to learning, have better listening skills and be more detail oriented in their thinking.
Prerequisites:
The student should be proficient in writing a paragraph each week at home, be able to read aloud in class and have a willing heart.
PRIOR TO CLASS, PLEASE PURCHASE: The Fallacy Detective by Nathaniel Bluedorn and Hans Bluedorn. For more information, see http://www.fallacydetective.com/products/item/the-fallacy-detective/
Workload:
Moderate. In class, mostly discussions, question answering and group games. At home, the students will read one chapter weekly and be assigned a weekly duty of making up their own fallacy or finding fallacies in articles, comics, coupons, ads or even discussions with another person to compile into their course binder. There will be grades offered for this course based on class participation, homework and quizzes/tests.
