Course Description:
This is a German language course, which will introduce students to the language and culture of the German-speaking world. Students will learn and practice basic German vocabulary such as school items, family, locations, numbers, animals, etc. and learn about the geography and culture. The methods used will include discussions, short drills, reading stories/ dialogs, translation sheets, a few songs, playing a few games, and completing workbook and book assignments.
This course will cover about 1/2 of the textbook (over the course of the year) and will be worth 1/2 high school credit.
Students will be introduced to German vocabulary and grammar in addition to the ability to communicate both written and orally/aurally in German. Class time will include homework review, discussion of grammar concepts, language practice, exams, some games, and cultural information. There will also be take-home quizzes on a regular basis.
Course Expectations:
It is very important that all students keep up with the work at all times. Students are required to participate in classroom activities/ discussions, to prepare all homework oral, aural and written, and to study for quizzes and tests. Each week students will receive a list of study activities for the week which will require approximately 2- 3 hours of time. Activities will include completing written homework assignments, memorizing vocabulary, conversations, studying for quizzes, and taking exams. The goal of this class is basic conversational fluency.

Workload: Approximately 2-3 hours of preparation per week. Includes written homework, reading, studying grammar and vocabulary, preparing two projects- one per semester (presentation in class), memorizing, taking exams and quizzes.
Student Provides: HIGH SPEED INTERNET ACCESS, Binder with Notebook paper (with 5 dividers), 3x5 cards, Textbook and workbook (Deutsch Aktuell 1, sixth edition). And a positive attitude and willingness to learn!
