This fun, interactive course will introduce emergent readers to the foundations of analysis through guided class conversations, creative reading, movement activities, and hands on projects.
In the first semester, we will learn about literary elements such as character, setting, rhythm and rhyming, theme, alliteration, and point of view. During the second semester, we will apply our learning and rotate Literature Circle jobs such as Character Describer, Problem Identifier, Questioner, Summarizer, Word Detective and others so each student has an active role in the book discussion.
We will read the humorous books of Arnold Lobel including Owl at Home, Mouse Soup, Frog and Toad Together, and Grasshopper on the Road. We will also explore some of the classic stories of Robert McCloskey in Make Way for Ducklings, Blueberries for Sal, Lentil, and One Morning in Main. Interspersed throughout the year, we will also have fun with short, light-hearted poetry selections.
