Course Description: The goal of this semester class is to introduce the sport of running for health, fitness, and, mostly, FUN. We will run OUTSIDE on most days even in the cold!* We will discuss the importance of healthy habits including healthy eating and active lifestyles. We will address various running and exercise concepts including, warm up, cool down, stretching, core training, etc. We will also address how you can improve and build endurance and speed as your running progresses. The class will keep a fitness journal. The semester will end with a timed 5K race. Throughout the semester we will build up our running distance to the 5K distance. Students will run from 1/2 mile at the beginning of the semester and we will gradually increase the distance and end with 3.1 miles. We will also incorporate specific training runs such as hill workouts, speed workouts, etc. Students will also be asked to plan a warm up game once during the semester.
Course Expectations: Kids with a positive attitude ready to run! Appropriate dress is mandatory for cold weather running (see below). Students are expected to run at least 2 other days outside of class. A training schedule will be provided.

Workload: Light
Teacher Provided Materials: Periodic race awards. End of year award for completion of class and 5K race. The fee may also cover the costs of our own 5K race. A light snack will be provided.
Student Provides: *Appropriate dress is required for outside running: hats, gloves, running/tennis shoes, etc. Please contact me if you need any direction in this area.
