Course Description:
ANCIENT HISTORY is a fascinating time period. It was a time so different from our own but inhabited by people just like us. The books we will read give shape to the ancient Sumerians, Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans.
In this class, students will learn about the fascinating mythologies of ancient cultures, the building of the pyramids, everyday life in Egypt and Rome, the birth of Christianity, and more. Class lessons will include reading assignments, mapping activities, writing and research projects, vocabulary lists, and maintaining a timeline.
The course outline is a follows: Part 1, The Rise of Civilization; Part 2, Ancient Egypt; Part 3, Ancient Greece; Part 4, Ancient Rome.

Augustus Caesar's World by Genevieve Foster
The Children's Homer by Padraic Colum
D'Aulaire's Book of Greek Myths by Ingri and Edgar D'Aulaire
Tales of Ancient Egypt by Roger Lancelyn Green
A complete reading list will be sent out to parents in early summer. Each student will need a copy of the novels we will read.
Course Expectations:
Students are expected to complete the assigned reading and writing exercises for homework. Active participation in class discussions is an essential part of understanding literature and how it reflects, as well as influences, our history and culture. Students are also expected to be respectful of their fellow classmates.
Prerequisites:
Students should be at the reading level (or higher) listed for the books above and be able to write strong sentences as well as summaries.
Workload:
Moderate, approximately 2-4 hours per week, including reading time. Students will be given reading assignments each week which will be accompanied by a written response or other relevant assignment.
Teacher Provides:
Timeline materials, copies of maps, handouts
Students Provide:
Notebook paper, sharpened pencils, colored pencils
