Grade Range: 7-8** This is a class that continues all year but the semesters have different topics.**
EARLY AMERICAN HISTORY will come alive as students read novels set in specific time periods accompanied by instruction in the important historical facts and events. Class time will be comprised of journal prompts, lecture, group discussion, cooperative learning activities, games, and writing assignments. Students will gain skill in literary analysis.
Novels to be read Fall 2018 include: The Witch of Blackbird Pond, Sign of the Beaver, Johnny Tremain, and Carry On, Mr. Bowditch.
Novels to be read Spring 2019 include: Invasion of Sandy Bay, Call of the Wild, Across Five Aprils, Abraham Lincolns World, The Land.
Historical information will be based on The History of US by Joy Hakim (teacher copy only). Class may be taken for credit as desired.
Course Expectations:
Students will be expected to participate in in-class writing assignments, discussions, and cooperative learning activities. Students will be expected to complete additional writing assignments and/or projects in a timely manner. A reader's response will be expected from all students for each book read. Students can expect to be writing each week.
Teacher provides: Handouts and outlines will constitute coursepack at conclusion of the course.
Student provides: 1-1.5" binder, dividers, lined paper, pens/pencils, access to the Internet and Word programs highly recommended.
Prerequisites: Students should be at the reading level listed for the books above and be able to write strong sentences as well as summaries.
Workload: Moderate. 2-4 hours/week, including reading time. Students will be given reading assignments each week which will be accompanied by a written response or other relevant assignment.
