In this one year course the students will read and study 9 different kinds of literature: Realistic Fiction, Biography, Mystery, Folk Tale, Fantasy, Adventure, Humor, Non Fiction and Historical Fiction. Through active discussion, graphic organizers, and fun projects, the student will learn about setting, plot, mood, and character development.

Course Expectations:
The chapter books we will be reading vary in reading level. Parents may read the book aloud to the students at home. Some writing will also be required. Each child needs to provide their own books, as well as a 3 ring binder. The students will be expected to read most of each book at home, although we may read some of it in class. They will also have one assignment per week related to the book. There will be projects related to each book created during class time.
Prerequisites:
The student should be able to read chapter books at a third grade level or parent must be willing to read book aloud to student at home. Student should be able to write complete sentences independently or with parental assistance.
Workload:
The student will be expected to read about 3-4 chapters a week and complete one short assignment each week at home.
