The student will gain many practical tips about building electronic circuits and working with electronic instruments. The electronic circuit simulation software that is web-based will be utilized by each student. When feasible, students will receive hands-on circuit building experiences.
We will be using the video text series: "Understanding Modern Electronics" by Great Courses. Topics will include:
AC vs DC
Semiconductors
Transistors
Amplifiers
Feedback
Op-Amps
Analog/Digitial
Flip-flips
Digital Memory
A to D conversion
The goal of this class is to function more as a club and not burden the student with a heavy workload as core subjects must be pursued at this age. The purpose of electronics class/club is to cultivate an interest in electronics in the student. Future career paths which use electronics will be introduced.
Class/Club Sessions will include dvd presentations, lectures, discussions, circuit simulations, and/or hardware build sessions.
Course/Club Expectations:
Students must be self-directed, willing to share knowledge, work with others and learn complicated ideas. 1-2 hour homework assignments will be expected to be completed weekly. Weekly attendance is necessary as the material will build on prior classes. The instructor will be unable to accommodate students who do not attend regularly.
Teacher Provides:
Supplemental handouts, lecture notes, study guides, equipment, etc
Students Provide:
A laptop which is setup to access the internet, materials for taking notes during lectures and a binder for extra resources.
Prerequisites:
This club/class is for high school students, only. Students must complete Algebra I prior to enrolling in club/class. Completion of high school physics will be beneficial to the student but will not be required to participate in club/class.
Workload:
Light. Approximately 1-2 hours per week unless the student is self-directed to do otherwise.
Grading:
This class will function as an electronics club. No grade will be provided. Parents will be encouraged to add this activity to their high school students transcripts as an extracurricular high school activity. Being a member of an electronics club will look great on transcripts!
