This is a core high school level government course. Class structure will consist of lectures, debate, and discussion of current events that will supplement the textbook content.
Course Expectations:
Weekly homework will be assigned including reading, questions, and current event articles with research. Participation in class (dialogue) and some memorization should be expected.
This course will use two books: Declaration Statesmanship (the text) and the Declaration Statesmanship Book of Readings. The Book of Readings contains excerpts from source documents including published works, speeches, and documents. The course also requires memorization of key documents; recitations will be done orally in class. These will be done as prompted by the course itself.
Students must be self-directed. Due to the abundance of material that will be covered in this class, students must be committed to doing the work necessary to keep up with weekly assignments. Students will be held responsible for completing all readings and assignments in a timely fashion. The instructor will be unable to accommodate students who do not keep up with the assignments as this would be unfair to the rest of the class and would result in the inability to cover all the material. One week we will discuss the movie America, Imagine the World Without Her. This will be assigned and students will be responsible for viewing it outside of class. Current events, especially ones that pertain to the US Constitution, will be discussed.
Class time will be used to cover what students will have read at home during the week. Students will be challenged to think and reason, and arrive at their own conclusions regarding many of these topics.
Teacher Provides:
Chapter outlines on which to annotate while reading, copies of outside articles to analyze, and an environment conducive to healthy debate.
Students Provide:
Textbooks and Book of Readings: Declaration Statesmanship (student text by Richard Ferrier and Andrew Seely) and Declaration Statesmanship Book of Readings (http://www.rainbowresource.com/searchspring.php?q=declaration+statesmanship); a 1-inch binder and a supply of loose leaf paper to take notes on; sharp pencils; and, weekly homework assignments. It will be helpful for students to be attentive to email (either their own or a parent's).
Prerequisites:
-American History
-The course textbook is regularly used in both upper level high school and at the college level so students must have a 10th grade reading level in order to keep up with the course workload.
-Students must be able to write short essays to present orally in class.
Workload:
Heavy. Students should expect at least 5 hours of homework a week, with more to accommodate memorization and current events assignments.
