* Chemistry Lecture Honors is a companion class with Chemistry Lab Honors. Students are expected to register for both hours. *
This full-year course covers significant figures, units, classification, the mole concept, stoichiometry, thermochemistry, thermodynamics, kinetics, acids and bases, redox reactions, solutions, atomic structure, Lewis structures, molecular geometry, the gas laws, and equilibrium. The first hour will be spent in lecture and solving problems as a class, individually, and/or with lab partners. The second hour will be spent performing lab experiments.
Honors distinction: More preparatory for college bound students pursuing math and science degrees. On the honors track, the quarterly and final grades are based solely off tests and labs (homework completion is additionally factored in for the general track students only). The homework expectations are more in depth for the honors track students, the final project and weekly labs will require outside sources that go beyond the concepts covered in the Apologia text in order to develop and strengthen critical thinking skills.
Course Expectations: Students will be expected to fulfill all the reading assignments and problems/questions prior to class. Tests will be taken at home or in class. There are 4 periodic exams (the last is a cumulative final), lab reports and one annual chemistry project.
Teacher Provides: Lab materials, 2 pocket folder
Students Provide: THIRD edition textbook (Exploring Creation with Chemistry), 3-ring binder, solutions manual, scientific calculator
Prerequisites: Strong Algebra 1 skills with a B+ or better. Strong study and organizational skills.
Workload: Moderate to heavy. Each module has approximately 35-50 conceptual questions and math problems to work out at home and in class in the form of "On Your Own" problems (done while reading the module), practice problems, review questions, test questions, as well as lab calculations. In addition to standard written or typed lab reports, three formal typed lab reports will be completed during the school year. One oral presentation with visual aides will be required, possibly presenting to an elementary or middle school science class at Heritage.
Workload: Course work should take 4-6 hours per week to complete.
