Hours/Week: 2
Max/Min Students: 12/6
Grade Range: 7-8*This is a full-year course with the expectation that students will continue for the entire year.
This course complements Mapping the World and Art Appreciation: World 7-8.
History and culture are important in understanding people from different backgrounds and how they can be reached for Christ. This study will focus on the history of the different regions of the world following the course Mapping the World by Heart, and studying the culture of the people that live in those regions. Students will come away with a deeper understanding of the world they live in and how they are affected by them
The teacher will use the book Around the World in 180 days as a guide for discussion.
Students in this class will be required to purchase the Student Workbook which will guide their reading, research and discussion in the class. There is a geography component to the book that will be tackled in Mapping the World, to allow the course to focus on history and culture.
Below is an excerpt from a review of 180 days on Cathy Duffys website.
The course is somewhat like a unit study. Continents serve as the organizing themes for each of the seven units. While history and geography are the primary subject areas covered, activities also draw students into religion, science, composition, speech, art, literature, government. Religion actually plays a significant role, and its taught with an evangelistic/missionary outlook from a Protestant viewpoint.
Class sessions will include guided discussions that will focus on understanding the history of each region and how their culture reflects these changes in history, as well as developing an understanding of the role culture plays in reaching people groups for Christ.
