DESCRIPTION: Life's Not a Game: Financial and Life Skills is a class designed to give high school students the chance to face real life experiences without the real life consequences. Through the "game" we will have class discussions about life choices, personal finances, managing a checkbook and savings accounts, budgeting, and critical thinking. The game simulates a month each week, so we will go through one year during the semester, and financial issues and decisions along the way. Students will have a game family scenario and create a monthly budget each week including mortgages, student loans and car payments, taxes and insurances, an allocated spending plan that accounts for any game cards they've drawn (birthdays, holidays, family events like births, deaths, new or lost job, etc), and a balanced checkbook and savings registry, as well as a savings breakdown.
PREREQUISITES: None, although those with Dave Ramsey experience may have the opportunity to apply some of the principles they have learned. Ramsey is NOT a necessary pre-cursor to this class.
WORKLOAD: Students will need to work on their budget each week, and have plans to address the "life events" which they have been dealt in class. These will vary from week to week, just as real life events ebb and flow. Students can expect to spend 1-2 hours per week, depending on the particular circumstances, but sometimes it may be more or less. Life is like a box of chocolates -- you never know what you're going to get!
TEACHER PROVIDES: Game and associated materials. Traditional grades will not be given without parent request.
EXPECTATIONS / STUDENT PROVIDES: Positive attitude, maturity, and seriousness about the subject matter. This is not a lecture class, so participation is a fundamental requirement if the class is to succeed. Willingness to participate in class discussions with thoughtful input. Commitment to put time and effort into working through issues, and having assignments completed. The game cannot continue week to week if people are not participating.
