Grade Range: 5-6BASIC GEOMETRY AND BEYOND
Course Description:
FALL COURSE: This class will cover all the necessary geometry concepts needed in elementary and into middle school. The concepts will be taught using as many fun hands-on activities and games as possible. Concepts covered are line concepts, angles, polygons, pentominoes, nets, 3-D objects, perimeter and area of a variety of polygons and circles. (It is my favorite unit to teach!!)
SPRING COURSE: Fractions, Decimal and Percents: These concepts are essential for success in pre-algebra and algebra. Students will learn to add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions, and decimals along with changing fractions to decimals to percents and become more confident going between fractions, decimals and percents. This area of math tends to be the weakest in most students and I want to strengthen this area of math so students experience the most success in middle school math.
Course Expectations:
FALL: The students will learn all the necessary geometry skills needed in elementary and into middle school. I will go as deep into the geometry concepts as I am able.
SPRING: Students will become more efficient in operations using fractions, and decimals.
Prerequisites:
FALL: The students are working at a 5th grade level and know how to multiply and divide.
SPRING: Need to know equivalent fractions, lowest terms, improper fractions to mixed numbers, and already know how to to make unlike fractions to be like fractions.
Workload:
FALL: Light. Homework will include multiplication practice if the students are need to increase their confidence and work that supports the geometry concept covered that week. It would not be more than 15 minutes a day at most.
SPRING: Moderate: Homework will include practicing the fraction, and decimals concept for the week to make sure the concept sticks. Homework may be between 15-30 minutes a day depending on the student. I want to be sensitive to the fact that the students will have their own math work to do for their home curriculum as well.
Teacher Provides: All hands-on materials, protractors, compasses. The lessons will be from a variety of sources.
Student Provides: Pencils, scissors and an eagerness to learn.
