Grade Range: 9-12* Biology Lecture is a companion class with Biology Lab. Students are expected to register for both hours. The lab class code is 6BIO for both General and Honors students.*
APOLOGIA BIOLOGY is the study of life. We will study Kingdoms Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae and Animalia. We will also study overviews of the Chemistry of life, The Cell, Cellular Reproduction, DNA, Genetics, Origins and Ecology.
Course Expectations: Students will be expected to follow a guided independent reading schedule to keep up with the coursework and excel in the exams. Students will attend Lecture 5th hour and Lab 6th hour. Module Tests will be sent home every other week, and taken without the aid of book or notes. Parent will be expected to proctor and grade exams using Solutions Manual. To demonstrate understanding, students will participate in weekly discussions. There will be dissections and microscope work.

Students Provide: Apologia Exploring Creation with Biology, 2nd ed., http://apologia.com; 3 ring binder with looseleaf paper; colored pencils; 5 tab dividers; pens/pencils
Prerequisites: Students should be at least in 9th grade. There will be dissections and microscope work.
Beyond the regular Biology Coursework, Honors Students will be given extra enrichment opportunities including: in-depth reports on related topics from the course's website, presentations of current events in the field and/or additional experiment and lab expectations.
Workload: Significant: Wile and Durnell, the authors, recommend 45 minutes of studying/day. Students should plan to study for this course 5 nights a week and maintain a binder of their Study Guides, Chapter Summaries, Lab Reports, Independent Study Projects and Exams. There is a significant amount of memory work with the vocabulary words in each module. Parental involvement, in terms of grading exams and monitoring progress as necessary, is expected.
A study group will be offered in South Lyon for those who need additional help. This study group is highly recommended but not required. The group will be led by Josie Elmers.
GENERAL BIOLOGY vs. HONORS BIOLOGY:
General Biology students will be responsible for completing all required reading, recording key terms and completing the review questions within the text book. Honors students will be given additional study materials each week to supplement the textbook. Both groups will be responsible for lab participation, reports and tests. The lab class code is 6BIO for both General and Honors students.
